I hope this letter finds you and your cars well, after what turned out to be a brutally hot summer!
Driving problem-free through a hot summer like we had this year is a testament to a well-maintained vehicle. It is a good return on the investment you have made in your cars cooling system over the years by maintaining it with high quality No-Rosion products.
FORMULA CHANGE: We have modified the No-Rosion formula for the first time in 15 years!
Since 2005, the Chinese have consumed over 85% of the world supply of molybdenum. They use it as a strengthening agent in the manufacture of high tensile steel beams that are used in construction. This has created a worldwide shortage, and escalated the price of molybdate up by over 500%. Molybdate is an ingredient in our No-Rosion formula. It protects aluminum from corrosion, erosion, and electrolysis.
So for the last several years, we have been researching replacement ingredients for molybdate. This year we finally had a breakthrough. A new technology has become available that effectively replaces molybdate with a combination of organic ingredients that actually OUTPERFORM molybdate. So we have modified our formula accordingly, and at the same time, declared our independence from the Chinese!
How does this affect you? In a couple of ways. First, you will benefit by the enhanced aluminum protection that our new formula offers. Second, you will notice that our No-Rosion Coolant Test Packet has been improved as well. Whereas our old test strips previously tested for GLYCOL, NITRITE, and MOLYBDATE, our new test strips now test for GLYCOL, NITRITE, and pH. The glycol reading determines freeze protection. The nitrite reading indentifies whether your system contains enough No-Rosion. And now, with the addition of the pH test, you will instantly know whether your coolant is corrosive. This makes for a more comprehensive, informative test.
COMMITMENT TO R&D: We are now a member of the ASTM D15 Engine Coolants Committee. The ASTM, or American Society for Testing and Materials, established its D15 Committee in 1947 in order to establish standardized test specifications that are used in the research and development of coolant formulas for light and heavy duty vehicles. Why is this important? The ASTM provides us with access to valuable resources used in our continued R&D. This allows us to continue offering the absolute utmost in product quality. In fact, it was through the ASTM that we learned of the new organic technology included in our new and enhanced No-Rosion formula.
TIPS FOR WINTER STORAGE… In every one of these newsletters, I try to answer some of the most frequently asked questions that I hear from No-Rosion customers throughout the year. One question I often hear this time of year is: What should I do, and not do, to properly prepare my cars for winter storage?
DO: Top off the fuel tank. Fuel oxidizes over time, and breaks down to form less-combustible byproducts. Oxygen is a catalyst to the oxidation of fuel. A half-full tank contains air, and therefore oxygen, that accelerates oxidation. But a full tank contains no air, which dramatically slows the rate at which fuel oxides.
DO: Fill tires with nitrogen. It is a colorless, odorless, non-reactive inert gas. It will therefore preserve rubber tires much better than compressed air, which contains oxygen and highly reactive ozone. As opposed to compressed air, nitrogen is also completely devoid of moisture, which further enhances its non-oxidizing properties for both the inner wheel as well as tire rubber.
DO: Put your vehicle on jack stands. Otherwise tires will develop flat-spots during winter storage. This is particularly the case in unheated garages, as cold concrete will worsen the effect.
DO NOT: Store your vehicle with an empty fuel tank or cooling system. As described above, this only introduces more air, and oxygen, that will accelerate the oxidation, or corrosion, process.
DO NOT: Store your vehicle with the same oil you ran all summer. Byproducts of combustion form acids in oil that will cause upper cylinder corrosion, and possible start-up damage. If you do not have time to change oil before storage, add a bottle of No-Rosion Lube System Passivator. It neutralizes acids, and increases oil film strength to passivate and protect upper cylinders against corrosion. Pouring in a bottle of No-Rosion Passivator is far easier than removing spark plugs and spraying an engine fogger, and yet it accomplishes the same effect.
DO NOT: Mix coolant types. Orange, yellow, and green coolants all contain inhibitor packages consisting of different chemistry. Mixing chemistries will compromise the protection it offers - in some cases, drastically.
DO: Check coolant freeze protection. Maybe you forgot that you topped off your cooling system earlier this year with water, thereby diluting the antifreeze concentration. Even if your garage is heated, it is good to have freeze protection, just in case! The only way to know for sure is to check it. DO: Add No-Rosion. Remember, the protection it provides is depleted over time. So you should add it annually.
